The last two stations on a tape line are where money quietly leaks: rolls come off the cutter clean, get shrink wrapped and labeled, then two or three workers fold blanks, count rolls into the case, tape the flaps and stack pallets until they wear out. Miscounts become claims, and loose stacks reach the port with crushed corners. On night shift the whole line waits on the packing bench. This guide covers what an automatic case packing machine does, how it pairs with a palletizer, and how to size both before you send an RFQ.

What Is a Case Packing Machine?

A case packer forms a carton from a flat blank, drops the counted product in and seals the flaps. On an integrated unit like the SD-KFX600 automatic case packing machine, all three jobs happen in one frame via vertical servo forming, so you get one footprint, one control panel and one operator instead of three machines.

The argument for it is not speed, it is consistency: hand packing is flexible and cheap to start, but output drifts through the shift and depends on who is standing there. A case packer runs the same cartons per minute at 3 a.m. as at 9 a.m.

Types of Case Packing and Palletizing Equipment

Integrated erector, packer and sealer (one machine). The SD-KFX600 runs 0 to 10 cartons per minute, with a carton window of L280 to 500 x W180 to 400 x H150 to 400 mm. The magazine holds about 50 blanks; carton specs are stored and recalled with one button. It draws 3 kW and 280 NL/min of air and alarms on no-tape and no-carton. Buy it when floor space is tight and you run a handful of case sizes.

Separate erector, packer and sealer in sequence (three machines). More floor, air and maintenance points, but each station is sized and replaced on its own for a wide carton mix or staged additions.

Collaborative palletizer. The SD-30KGA collaborative palletizer carries a 30 kg payload, stacks to 2100 mm, works within a 1900 mm radius and occupies 3150 x 1716 mm of floor at a spec-sheet speed under 9 cartons per minute. Where Case Packing and Palletizing Fit on a Tape Line

Work backwards from the pallet and the sequence is clear:

1. Paper core cutting with the SD-F001, which cuts cores only and feeds the slitting machine as a core loader.

2. Slitting and rewinding, two routes: large-metrage OPP runs on a slitting machine you supply (SD-F001 cores plus OPP rolls), while mixed industrial tapes use the SD-201F twin-shaft rewinding machine to rewind and SD-F cutters to width.

3. Roll packaging and shrink wrapping on the SD-77HM heat shrink packaging machine, the SD-800, or the SD-60SS for electrical tape.

4. Labeling with the SD-200 side-labeling machine for round rolls, or the SD-300 flat labeling machine.

5. Case packing on the SD-KFX600.

6. Palletizing on the SD-30KGA.

Two points before you buy. The case packer is the first station where the unit becomes a shipping unit, so its count is what your customer audits on arrival, and the palletizer never sets line pace, it absorbs it, so put a short buffer conveyor between them or every robot-cell stop backs up into the sealer.

Automatic Case Packing vs Manual Packing

Manual packing is the right call for a wide band of real plants, not a fallback: any carton, any count, no changeover program, no spare-parts list, no amortization pressure, but it loses on repeatability and on labor cost that climbs every year.

An automatic case packer wins on consistent counts, seal quality, and two or three people freed for judgment; the machine has a carton window and changeover needs discipline.

Run a payback check before you decide. A packer typically frees two to three packing hands: take your fully loaded cost per operator per year (wages, benefits, supervision), multiply by two or three, divide price by that saving, and if payback passes roughly three years, or the freed hands move elsewhere, it is a weak case. The palletizer is different math: stacking is the heaviest, most repetitive job, so it pays back faster on backs than on headcount.

When an Automatic Case Packer Does Not Pay Off

These are the plants where changeover eats the speed advantage and the capex fails a sensible payback:

  • Daily output below about 500 cases. At that volume one packer covers the bench with time to spare, so a case packer sits idle between batches; you pay for capacity you never use.
  • More than about 15 carton specifications, each batch under 50 cases. The SD-KFX600 stores recipes and recalls them with one button, but every swap still stops the line to reload the magazine and verify the carton; when you change carton ten times a day for thirty-case runs, changeover erases the speed gain: you automate the gaps, not the batches.
  • Wildly unstable order flow. If one month is 3,000 cases and the next is 200, a fixed packing cell is a liability in quiet weeks, while manual packing scales to zero without a lease.

For any of these, automate the palletizer first and keep packing manual. Stacking carries the real cost and injury risk, and a robot absorbs variable pace without locking changeover into a machine you rarely run. Revisit the case packer once volume passes roughly 500 cases a day, or your carton mix settles.

How to Choose the Right Case Packing Machine

1. Start from your carton, not the machine. Measure your smallest and largest case against the SD-KFX600 window of L280 to 500 x W180 to 400 x H150 to 400 mm, and flag any export carton outside it in the RFQ for a non-standard build.

2. Size rated speed at roughly 60% of peak demand. If your peak is 6 a minute, do not buy a machine rated at exactly 6; headroom lets you recover after a stop.

3. Count your case sizes and changeovers per shift. If you swap four times a shift, stored recipes beat top speed; if you run one carton all year, buy speed.

4. Weigh your heaviest full case before specifying the palletizer. The SD-30KGA payload is 30 kg including the gripper, not product plus tooling; over that limit you need a different robot class and must send the real figure.

5. Check utilities and floor plan early. The packer needs 3 kW and 280 NL/min of air; the palletizer cell needs 3150 x 1716 mm of floor and 2100 mm of vertical room, plus a pallet truck path clear of the envelope.

6. Treat compliance as a hard requirement. For export we supply CE certification and light-curtain guarding, which EU and Middle East buyers get asked for at customs and by their insurers; retrofitting costs more than specifying it now.

A: No. Payload is 30 kg including the gripper, and running it at ceiling for two shifts shortens life. Either reduce rolls per case to stay under the limit, or send your real case weight, stack height and pallet pattern for a heavier class.

Q: Can I buy the palletizer now and add the case packer next year?

A: Yes. Automate whichever station your line waits on. For most plants that is stacking; fix conveyor height and discharge direction now so the case packer drops in later without a rebuild.

Q: How long does installation and commissioning take?
