SD-77HM Shrink Wrapping Machine: Single-Roll Packaging for 76 mm Core Tape

The 76 mm (3 inch) core is the standard on many industrial and electrical tape lines. If your finished rolls sit on 76 mm cores, the wrapper you buy has to accept that core, not fight it. The SD-77HM is built around the 76 mm core for single-roll shrink wrapping with film and a paper card. This article shows where it fits on the line, how it compares with the 38–42 mm SD-60SS and the semi-auto SD-920HM, and how to decide if it is the right machine for your plant.

What Is the SD-77HM?

The SD-77HM is a single-roll heat shrink packaging machine. It wraps one finished tape roll in shrink film with a paper card, then sends the roll through a heat tunnel to form a tight, dust-free, branded pack. The job it does is simple to state: a bare roll arrives at the distributor scratched, dusty, or with no product information on it. Film plus a paper card protects the roll face, carries your print, and keeps the roll presentable through customs and onto the shelf.

Types of Tape Roll Shrink Wrappers

The first split in this family is core ID, not speed. Three machines cover the common single-roll cases.

SD-77HM: Single-Roll, 76 mm Core, High-Speed

Best for: converters running 76 mm (3″) core electrical or industrial tape in single rolls.

Core difference: accepts a 76 mm core only. 38 mm and 56 mm cores do not fit this machine.

What supports it: man-machine interface with programmable micro-computer control; automatic fault alarm with one-key operation; high-precision mechanical hand for paper-card suction; constant-temperature adjustable control; servo motor drive; low energy consumption; compact turntable structure.

Choose this when: your whole product range is on 76 mm cores and you want a single-roll wrapper that runs without an operator standing over it.

SD-60SS: Single-Roll, 38–42 mm Core

Best for: PVC electrical tape on the small 38–42 mm core used across most electrical tape lines.

Core difference: built for 38–42 mm cores. It does not take 76 mm rolls.

What supports it: the same basic film plus paper-card function, programmable control, fault alarm, paper-card suction, constant-temperature system, servo drive, and a compact turntable.

Choose this when: your rolls are on 38–42 mm cores and you want the highest single-roll throughput in this family.

SD-920HM: Semi-Auto, 76 mm-Capable, Single or Multi-Roll

Best for: plants that run 76 mm cores but also handle 56 mm and 38 mm, and want single- or multi-roll packs.

Core difference: built around 76 mm but also runs 56 mm and 38 mm cores; manual loading; supports both single-roll and multi-roll (cuff) packs.

What supports it: modular moulds per diameter; wireless remote APP monitoring and system upgrade; independent colour and transparent film paths; automatic paper-card suction and release; auto-stop on fault alarm.

Choose this when: you change core sizes often or want the option of multi-roll packs, and can accept manual loading.

The split matters: the SD-60SS and the SD-77HM are not a low-end and a high-end pair. They are two paths divided by core ID. Settle the core first, then compare speed and automation.

Where the SD-77HM Fits on the Line

Paper core preparation (the SD-F001 cuts the cores) leads into rewinding and slitting, then comes single-roll film and card wrapping (the SD-77HM), then column shrink for multi-roll packs (a column unit such as the SD-1060 with a tunnel), then labeling, then case erecting and sealing, then palletizing.

The SD-77HM sits at the single-roll pack step. It is not the whole line. If you only ship single rolls, it is the last packaging step before cartoning. If you also ship multi-roll columns, a column shrink unit with a tunnel handles that stage downstream of the SD-77HM.

SD-77HM vs SD-60SS vs SD-920HM

Core ID first:

  • 76 mm core: SD-77HM or SD-920HM.
  • 38–42 mm core: SD-60SS.

Single-roll vs multi-roll:

  • Single-roll only: SD-77HM (automatic) or SD-60SS (automatic, small core).
  • Want multi-roll packs too: SD-920HM (or the SD-TB1020 for a fully automatic cuff pack).

Automation:

  • Automatic loading: SD-77HM or SD-60SS.
  • Manual loading, more core flexibility, lower cost: SD-920HM.

Throughput (rated):

  • SD-60SS: up to 65 rolls/min.
  • SD-77HM: up to 55 rolls/min.
  • SD-920HM: up to 50 packs/min (single or multi-roll).

The “high speed” name on the SD-77HM does not mean it out-runs the SD-60SS. Rated speed is a function of core size and pack format, not a quality ranking. Decide by core ID and pack type, not by the word “high speed”.

How to Choose the Right Single-Roll Wrapper

The six points below settle the technical fit.

1. Core ID. Measure the core your finished rolls sit on. 76 mm points to the SD-77HM or SD-920HM. 38–42 mm points to the SD-60SS. This is the first filter; nothing else matters until it is settled.

2. Daily output. Count finished rolls per shift. The rated speeds above are mechanical ceilings; real output depends on roll diameter and how fast you load. Send us rolls per shift and we will size it.

3. Film type. The SD-77HM runs the common shrink films used on tape, including PVC and POF. Tell us your film gauge and we confirm tension and seal settings.

4. Floor space. The SD-77HM uses a compact turntable structure. Measure the footprint you can give the wrapper plus the tunnel.

5. Roll diameter range. Know your smallest and largest finished roll OD. The wrapper and the tunnel must clear your largest OD.

6. Changeover. If you run one roll size all day, changeover is a non-issue. If you switch often, check how the core and film set change between jobs.

The six steps above settle the technical fit. The five questions below settle the commercial terms.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

1. Who installs it? Ask whether the supplier sends an engineer or guides installation by video. We install by video: the machine is set up the day it arrives and commissioned in 1–3 days, with no costly on-site trip.

2. Does it carry CE and light-curtain guarding? For the EU and most export markets this is non-negotiable. Our wrappers ship with CE documentation and light-curtain guarding as standard.

3. What is the real life under two shifts? Ask for references running two shifts. Our machines have run seven years under two-shift production at customer plants.

4. Can they troubleshoot remotely? Ask how support works after year one. We monitor and upgrade over a wireless remote APP and walk your team through faults by video.

5. What happens when I change core ID or roll height? Ask how a core or height change is handled. On the SD-77HM a 76 mm core is fixed; if you also run 56 mm or 38 mm, the SD-920HM takes mould changes for those sizes. These are the standards we build to at Shengde.

FAQ

Is the SD-77HM really faster than the SD-60SS?

No. Rated speed is up to 55 rolls/min on the SD-77HM and up to 65 rolls/min on the SD-60SS. The “high speed” label refers to the machine class, not a speed ranking over the SD-60SS. Choose by core ID and pack format, not by the name.

My rolls are on 38 mm cores. Can the SD-77HM wrap them?

No. The SD-77HM accepts 76 mm cores only. For 38–42 mm cores, the SD-60SS is the matching single-roll wrapper.

Can it run both PVC and POF shrink film?

Yes. The SD-77HM handles the common shrink films used on tape. Film gauge and seal temperature are set per job; send your film spec and we confirm the settings.

Does the SD-77HM need a separate shrink tunnel?

The wrapper applies the film and card; a heat shrink tunnel forms the tight pack. In a single-roll line the SD-77HM pairs with a tunnel such as the SD-4522 (energy-saving, insulated) or the economy SD-4020, depending on budget.

What does a customer see after switching from hand-packing?

A Malaysian customer reported, after replacing hand-packing, about 20% more output, 30% lower labour cost, and 19% fewer defective packs, measured against their own manual baseline. Results depend on your starting point; we size the line to your current pack rate.

Conclusion

The SD-77HM is the single-roll shrink wrapper for 76 mm core tape. If your rolls sit on 38–42 mm cores, the SD-60SS is the match; if you also run smaller cores or want multi-roll packs with manual loading, the SD-920HM covers that.
