Why Overseas Tape Factories Struggle With Standardization

Tape Industry Observer #11

Standardization sounds simple — until it meets reality.

Many overseas tape factories struggle with standardization because:
• Production lines were built in phases
• Equipment comes from multiple sources
• Processes evolved through trial and error

The result is a factory that works — but only because people constantly intervene.

This creates a false sense of control.

When output increases or customer requirements tighten, informal processes start to fail.

Automation alone does not solve this.
Standardization must come first.

Successful factories usually follow this path:
1️⃣ Fix process logic
2️⃣ Reduce variation points
3️⃣ Then introduce automation

In tape manufacturing, automation amplifies standardization — it cannot replace it.
